 TL 12/31: The Hugo Hype

Excerpt from:
[A YEAR IN REVIEW]
2006: Taking a look back
by Times Leader staff

(Times Leader photo)
March: Hugo Selenski was found not guilty of the most serious charges against him. He still faces a trial on additional murder chargers and remains in jail.

The Hugo hype

The hype brewing over Hugo Selenski's homicide case finally came to a head in March.

The charismatic 33-year-old homicide suspect had been in the news ever since June 5, 2003, the day police converged on the Kingston Township home Selenski shared with his then-girlfriend and found the remains of at least five people.

Four months of intrigue would pass before Selenski was charged with using a shotgun to kill two suspected drug dealers.

Then came the trial, on March 1, 2006. It would last almost two weeks and would end with Selenski cleared of killing both men, but convicted of burning their bodies.

Then, quickly, the attention shifted.

Selenski was led from court to be charged with killing Michael Kerkowski and Tammy Fassett.

The hype started anew.

2007: Some day in 2007, it all could come to an end with another homicide trial.

--------------------------------------------------------

Definition of hype: Slang. n. Excessive publicity and the ensuing commotion: the hype surrounding the murder trial.
(courtesy of google and www.answers.com/topic/hype )

That was their example, not mine!!! (Ha, what a coincidence..) And the 'hype' surrounding Hugo was brought upon by the media themselves who lament upon the 'hype' that he has/brings/whatever they want to say/complain/whine about. Man, the TL is starting to sound like DL more and more every day. I wonder if he's one of the owners.. I certainly wouldn't want that known..

BTW, if the TL gets their way with getting the names of the Hazleton IIRA support donors revealed, it's ONLY FAIR that they reveal who owns their paper. Really now, c'mon, TL, man up or shut up!!

CV 12/31: The word for 2006 was intense

Citizens Voice Staff

Looking back, 2006 was a year of mixed news, good and bad, as is every year. But the thing that stands out is the events of 2006 were large, momentous.

...

Also on the subject of crime, the case of Hugo Selenski took twists and turns never before seen in the Luzerne County courts. Selenski was cleared of two counts of murder but was immediately charged with the murders of two other people. During the case, the family of Selenski and District Attorney David Lupas and Judge Peter Paul Olszewski Jr. openly criticized each other and Judge Olszewski eventually stepped down from being the judge in the second trial, which is still to come.

...

You're REAL professional, DL, REAL high class. HA. I'm not even gonna waste my breath on any more comments..

12/29 Times Leader: Selenski lauds Lupas for jail win

Times Leader Friday, December 29, 2006
Homicide suspect's letter tweaks DA
By DAVID WEISS dweiss@timesleader.com

"You consistently walk into trials grossly unprepared and it would only seem fitting of you to try and prevent your opponent from proper preparation." Hugo Selenski Referring to District Attorney David Lupas in a letter

WILKES-BARRE – They've exchanged barbs for years, but homicide suspect Hugo Selenski is offering congratulations to District Attorney David Lupas.

It might be more of a teasing jab, though.

Selenski recently sent a letter to the Times Leader expressing his thoughts about a spat regarding his prison digs.

His attorneys wanted him to be housed at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility instead of the State Correctional Institution at Frackville to make it easier to meet with him.

But Lupas wanted him to stay at the state prison.

And that led to Selenski staying at Frackville, for now.

Selenski, in his letter, said he was initially "angry" with Lupas. "But then I had to laugh," Selenski wrote. "You consistently walk into trials grossly unprepared and it would only seem fitting of you to try and prevent your opponent from proper preparation.

"Your actions make much more sense now, and I must congratulate you on a job well done."

Lupas on Thursday responded by saying:

"I really don't like to comment on this nonsense other than to observe that Selenski seems to enjoy generating press for himself. Obviously, he just seems to be seeking attention again in the media."

A hearing on Selenski's housing issue is set for next week.

The debate was sparked after Selenski's lead attorney, John Pike, filed court papers asking for Selenski to be housed indefinitely at the county prison, where Selenski made a dramatic escape in October 2003.

Pike asked for the move because meetings at the state prison would be monitored by surveillance cameras. He and his team would be separated from Selenski by glass and forced to speak with him via telephone. Documents given to Selenski would first be inspected by prison officials, Pike said.

Court of Common Pleas Judge Chester Muroski initially approved the request, but Lupas and his prosecution team filed an objection to the move.

They said the meetings are not recorded and documents are not inspected by officials. The prosecutors said they were reluctant to have Selenski housed at the county jail because of "witness safety, co-conspirator contact and security for" Selenski.

Muroski then decided to have Selenski brought to the county for a meeting with his attorneys but be returned to Frackville pending next week's hearing.

Pike on Wednesday filed additional court papers stating Lupas has no legal standing to fight the transfer.

Selenski and Paul Weakley are awaiting trial in the deaths of pharmacist Michael Kerkowski and his girlfriend, Tammy Fassett.

Selenski's full letter will be published Jan. 2 on the Times Leader editorial page.

Hmmm, DL is, like the snapping turtle my dad was watching on an Animal Planet show the other night. Ha ha ha.... Wacth out, he'll take a finger off!!

And he's a broken record, saying the same shit over and over and over again, I'm sick of it.

i don't see how a guilty person would do things like that. i think some people just see him and just don't like something and automatically take that and make him guilty in their eyes- b.s.! ok, i'm off my soapbox for now... =-p

I don't know why the TL waits to print the whole letter but lets DL comment on it before the public reads it, yadda yadda yadda. They definitely have impartiality issues, and not just with Hugo. See the Hazleton IIRA fiasco- they're suing for the names of the donors who support the IIRA--- F**cK you TL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! =-P I only continue to check their website. I won't buy an issue, ha.

 Capricorn

I'm a goat, baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.. (Ok, so a sheep is more of a baaa'er, so what! =-p) Any other goats in the house???

Capricorn, the tenth Sign of the Zodiac, is all about hard work. Those born under this Sign are more than happy to put in a full day at the office, realizing that it will likely take a lot of those days to get to the top. That's no problem, since Capricorns are both ambitious and determined: they will get there. Life is one big project for these folks, and they adapt to this by adopting a businesslike approach to most everything they do. Capricorns are practical as well, taking things one step at a time and being as realistic and pragmatic as possible. The Capricorn-born are extremely dedicated to their goals, almost to the point of stubbornness. Boy, those victories sure smell sweet, though, and that thought alone will keep Capricorns going.
The Goat symbolizes Capricorns, and an apt mascot it is. Goats love to climb to the top of the mountain, where the air is clear and fresh. In much the same way, Capricorns want to get to the top of their chosen field so that they can reap the benefits of success; namely fame, prestige and money. Getting to the top isn't always a walk in the park, however, so it's likely that Goats will ruffle a few feathers along the way. These folks can indeed be domineering, even egotistical, on their route to the top. They'll tell you it's part of being a leader with bright new ideas (in keeping with the Cardinal Quality assigned to this Sign).

Capricorns are industrious, efficient, organized and won't make a lot of waves. They are scrupulous with details and adopt a rather conventional posture in business and in life. These folks feel best playing it safe, since this is a fail-safe way to get to the top -- eventually.

Thankfully, Capricorns are patient, too, and are happy to wait for their ship to come in. The flip side to this staid behavior is that Goats can become quite unforgiving of those who aren't as diligent or ambitious as they are. Capricorns need to remember that they do need allies along the way, ambitious or otherwise. In any case, once Capricorns receive the recognition and social status they so fervently crave, it's likely that all will be forgiven.

Capricorn is ruled by the Planet Saturn. In ancient Roman mythology, Saturn was the father of many of the gods. Consider him top dog, if you will, and then you'll see a parallel to Capricorns. Those born under this Sign also want to be the top dog, and they're smart enough to know that the title won't simply be handed to them. Caps are happy to work for it, and luckily they possess enough discipline and sense of responsibility to get them there. Capricorns tend to be mature and are amply blessed with common sense, two more qualities which help their success-driven endeavors.

With any kind of luck (make that considerable work), Caps will find themselves on that top step, but they should also remember those who have helped them on their quest. They are traditional (but not quite the button-down stiffs some would suggest) and somewhat inhibited, prompting others to wonder if they can ever enjoy success and its rarefied air. Rest assured, these folks will be smiling inside.

The Element associated with Capricorn is Earth. No big surprise there! Caps are down-to-earth in the sense that they're not interested in wild ideas or round-the-world dreams. They would much rather stay put and get to work. Remember, these are the businesspeople of the Zodiac, so in their sensible and economical way, they'll get up every morning and see to it that their job is done to the highest degree of quality possible. While Caps can occasionally get a bit materialistic and greedy (they just want a reward for all their hard work), they are far too dignified and practical to get carried away. Plus, they love tradition and reserve and want to appear polite and friendly.

A Capricorn at rest (yes, there is such a thing) enjoys leisurely sports, like golf and croquet -- so long as they have a chance to win! Playing with a crew is also nice, since it brings to mind their beloved workplace. Team colors for a Capricorn are likely to be earthy brown and khaki, much like the classic, relaxed slacks they like to wear. Sporty Caps also need to watch their teeth and knees, and they shouldn't be too daring, lest they break some bones. When it comes to love, Capricorns are ever devoted and never emotive.

The worker bees of the Zodiac are Capricorns, an ambitious and determined lot who are willing to do what it takes to get what they want. It sounds like this work could be fun where love is concerned, especially if the payoff is silky sweet. Much like the Sea Goat, which symbolizes the members of this Sign, Capricorn is forever climbing and reaching for greater heights. Where a lover is concerned, the crescendo of dating, romance and mating can be electric, indeed. The Sea Goat is also organized and happy to craft a beautiful romance for that special someone. Social status is also important to Capricorn, so it's more than likely that the mating game will involve a healthy dose of glamour and dazzle. The one who wins their heart will be powerful in both the boardroom and the bedroom. Yes, power is a strong aphrodisiac for the sleek Sea Goat, and in return, their lover will get a most devoted and grateful partner.

Capricorn and Romance

The often traditional, somewhat reserved and usually cautious Sea Goat is certain to take some time to size up the stakes in the game of love. Capricorn knows what they want, and once they fix their eyes on the prize, will work hard to get it. These folks are winners and often attract the same. They also like things to be orderly and pretty and know that they'll get much more with honey than with vinegar. Focused as they are on appearances, Capricorn is likely to lure an attractive lover and one who will give them the full flush of love. Nothing could be sexier! The smart Sea Goat enjoys combining the practical and the romantic, which means that anything it does is likely to combine both work and play. Toiling with this prancing animal, though, can be loads of fun.

Capricorn in Relationships

Where the 'us' thing is concerned, Capricorn keeps the ground rules pretty simple: Those with money, power and the trappings of success should step up to the plate. A relationship with the Sea Goat does cut both ways, for those born under this sign will work hard at taking a union with the right person to newer and continually greater heights. If their lover can throw in a dash of excitement along the way, all the better, since the Sea Goat loves a splashy social occasion and the chance to flash some finery. A bit of solidity, along with excitement and passion, is just the right mix. In the ideal relationship, the Sea Goat is a wellspring of love; a lover who can give of themselves completely and protect the object of their affections. Capricorn's ideal soul mate is at the top of their game and willing to take the Sea Goat along for this stylish ride.

Capricorn in Love

The person out there wailing "Is that all there is?" a la Peggy Lee might well be a Capricorn, since love can at times be difficult for these folks. This measure of mistrust might well be attributed to a fear of losing oneself in affairs of the heart. The good news is that with the right one, the Sea Goat positively blooms in love, and is a loyal and devoted partner. When they give, their love is total. Not only that, it's also delicious for both, since Capricorns can easily engage in dreamy states where their lover's complete satisfaction is all that's on their mind. This can mean creating a beautiful home (although it's likely to be with their lover's money) or being the perfect partner at a party. Love is a blissful state for the Sea Goat, and one which they will work hard to keep.

Capricorn and Sex

Behind that cool Capricorn exterior lies a white-hot interior waiting to be discovered by a worthy lover. Splendor beneath the sheets is likely to be a straight-ahead affair for the Sea Goat, since this practical Earth sign doesn't need anything flashy or fancy to get aroused. The arousal here is from being happily in love, since love and sex do go hand in hand for Capricorn. The Sea Goat is a persistent, passionate and loyal lover, so whoever is on the receiving end is in for a guaranteed good time. While Capricorns abhor being dependent on their lover, they would certainly like to be nurtured by them and exposed to new levels of delight. There is no doubting that the frisky Sea Goat can explode with an understanding, strong and libidinous partner.

What Capricorn Needs

The competitive streak in the Sea Goat means that they are attracted to a game that's fun -- and also one which they can probably win. It's likely that their sights will be fixed on someone classy and sexy and also with plenty of money and tales of success to turn heads, including theirs. The right partner is also responsive and has their feet planted firmly on the ground, as they do. If the Sea Goat's mate can both chill them out and bring them out, it could be a match made in sexy heaven.

The Capricorn lover sets goals, works hard and won't be denied. They are ambitious yet devoted, an intense (often internal) flame waiting to burn for the right person. Those lucky enough to latch on will have a winner in their midst, and a fun one at that!
